Canine Bowen Technique is a complementary system of bodywork. Using thumbs and fingers, gentle moves are made over specific points on the dog. Trust is built up first. Sessions are held at the dog’s own home, to promote a more relaxed atmosphere.

We work in a holistic way. We work with your vet. We do not diagnose. We do not force a dog. We do not alter or prescribe medication. We do not treat specific conditions.
You, the owner, ask your vet to fill in a CBT vet confirmation form. This shows us that the dog has primary healthcare in place.
An extensive consultation form will be filled in to give the whole picture of your dog’s life. Sessions occur in your home to ensure your dog is comfortable with an after-care sheet given. Every dog is different but typically between 1 to 3 sessions are required.
Studying to become a Canine Bowen Technique Practitioner was the natural next step as I have been around dogs all my life. I worked with an animal rescue in Oldham for several years. I have fostered many dogs, rehabilitating them in order to find them a suitable home. This enabled me to experience a wide variety of sizes, breeds and temperaments of dogs. All our dogs have been rescue dogs.

Canine Bowen Technique is based on the human Bowen Technique developed by Tom Bowen in Australia in the 1950’s which was brought to the U.K. in the 1990’s. Bowen practitioners Sally and Ron Askew who were also dog trainers and behaviourists developed the technique for dogs. With collaboration with their local vet, they worked on their own dogs and developed a professional program of training with a holistic approach. In 2004 The European Guild of Canine Bowen Technique was created to train, promote, represent, and regulate skilled and experienced CBT practitioners.
Ron and Sally retired in 2017 changing the name to Canine Bowen Technique Association. Carole Justice Gray now teaches Canine Bowen Technique and is the vice chairman of the organisation.

I would definitely recommend Canine Bowen for dogs. Lily our 5yr old Springer Spaniel limped every now & then after a long walk & was obviously in some sort of pain but we couldn’t pin point it. After a visit to the vets, they said it was a weakness in her hip.
After receiving treatment myself for Bowen Amanda told me she would have a look at Lily. She was very calm with her & put her at ease. After Amanda felt all round her joints Lily lay on her side & almost let her know what was hurting.
After the treatment & 2 more sessions, to this day she hasn’t limped since which is amazing! Thank you from both of us.

This last week she’s been very, very cuddly and drank lots of water again! She’s not really chewed her feet again (even after she did that night ha ha) that’s been a massive improvement! She also not been as anxious when I leave the room, she’s just lay back down rather than follow me.
I think canine Bowen was amazing! It was so nice to watch Bella go from quite timid in your company to so comfortable and relaxed so quickly!!
I was so impressed watching you work with her because she’s normally scared of anyone new but she really settled with you! You worked so well with her and were so patient and kind, creating a trusting bond between the two of you which meant she even felt comfortable enough to lie in between your legs rather than mine.
I really have noticed she doesn’t chew her feet anywhere near as much as she did, I would say 80-85% improvement overall! She’s also more relaxed when I’m not sat with her, she’s not looking for me or following me as much.
I would 100% recommend canine Bowen to others, it’s been a great experience for myself and Bellatrix, she’s really benefitted from it.
Just a massive thank you Mandy! You were amazing with her and so gentle. It was so nice to see her warmup to you and trust you as I said! You are the perfect person for this new venture because of your incredible patience and kindness. Dogs can just sense it from you!
Thanks so much again! N.R.
I'm just emailing to give some feedback on my dog Pippa after her Bowen therapy course with Mandy. I've found that since Pippa has received this course, she is a lot more relaxed around strangers, she is happy to greet anyone that enters the house or even out on walks and has a lot more confidence! Pippa had struggled with ear problems most her life, she would shake her head, scratch, they would be extremely waxy. However, since the course, it's cleared up and there's no more scratching, head shaking or even wax build up! We're very happy with the results we've seen since having the course and would highly recommend! A.H.
Layla before her Bowen sessions with Mandy was tired a lot of the time and struggled to move around. She had a general low mood and was showing little interest in her toys. During her sessions with Mandy, Layla become increasingly more excited to see Mandy as the weeks went on and created a good bond together. Layla really enjoyed each session and was calm during her sessions. Mandy was incredibly receptive to Layla constantly reassuring her and listening to her body language to ensure she was comfortable with the movements she was performing. Mandy was excellent at making sure Layla was comfortable at all times and only did what Layla would allow. After the sessions Layla appeared brighter in the face and had a little more energy generally. She moved a little easier and was even able to go for a short walk, which before she struggled with. After each sessions she had a short sleep, but woke up easier and on one occasion brought a toy to us and began playing. It had been some time since she had shown interest in her toys, so this was a great positive from her sessions. Other members of the family agree that after her sessions she seemed brighter, happy and more alert. Mandy was excellent with Layla and I would recommend her to anyone with a dog who is struggling with old age. Layla has benefited from having Bowen and I’m very grateful to Mandy for helping her. First of all thank you for introducing us and Dexter to Bowen, he clearly loved the experience and felt very comfortable with you, so thank you.
After the last treatment, Dexter was very playful and still a noticeable reduction in licking his paws. (This has continued).
I think from the first session Dexter enjoyed the experience and responded to you well. Your manner with him and explaining everything helped him stay calm and also showed us, he was enjoying it.
I would recommend the therapy to a friend, I have already recommended human Bowen to a friend who suffers from things.
Thank you again S and M
What was your experience of Canine Bowen?
I’ve got to admit that I didn’t really expect a lot - but thought it was worth giving it a try, as my dog Jimmy is of a nervous disposition and really reactive. After his first session, the effects were quite profound.
Did I work well communicating with your dog?
Yes, very well. What was noticeable is when you returned, Jimmy sat right near you and seemed to be expecting the therapy. He was responsive when you gestured for him to move. I think your calm demeanour helped put him at ease.
What changes if any did you notice?
After the first session, I noticed Jimmy's separation anxiety was reduced when I was in the shop. I could leave without him barking. I have also noticed that he wants more contact since the therapy
Would you recommend CBT to a friend?
Absolutely. B.S.
What was your experience of Canine Bowen?
The dog wouldn’t allow the Bowen to really take place so I’m not able to comment on the treatment as such. However, in terms of you as a practitioner, it was obvious from the outset that you are attuned to dog behaviour and reactions and were skilful in creating that relationship with Ludo. I guess this must be the first hurdle to overcome each time – winning the trust of your patient and I thought this was excellent. The sessions were regular, you had let us know what to expect from them and possible reactions from the dog, and you gave guidance before the sessions on how you would like us to prepare / respond. This meant we were ready and had expectations on how the session might work out. All the way through you shared information and encouraged questioning.
How did you find the treatment?
Ludo wasn’t up for really allowing any treatment. As you saw, he trusted your touch but when it came to any sensitive point, he was quick to let you know he wasn’t comfortable with going further
Did I work well communicating with your dog?
I thought you did a great job in building trust with Ludo. He is still young and excitable and yet in the first session you calmed and settled him so that he was laying on you / next to you and very relaxed.
He responded to your refusal to play and didn’t pester you which is good clear communication because he can be very persistent in his play requests.
Your affinity to, and experience with dogs, shows very clearly with your approach. On each session you were recognising behaviour and signals and responding accordingly and as above in the first session you had established an understanding, which you were able to build on throughout as your knowledge of Ludo and his character grew
What changes if any did you notice? – no real changes as he wasn’t letting you go further than the initial Bowen moves.
Would you recommend CBT to a friend? – yes, even though Ludo wasn’t up for it, I would definitely recommend to people who were open to the treatment. Especially if movement related issues. We’ve had older dogs before who would have benefited greatly from some relief from their stiffness and aches. All in all it was a very positive experience for us and, I believe, for Ludo G.H.
Why do I need a veterinary confirmation form?
Canine Bowen Technique is a complementary Technique we work with your vet. The form needs to be both signed and stamped before any work can take place.
Do you diagnose?
We do not diagnose we work with your vet. We do not alter or prescribe medications. We do not treat specific conditions. We do not force dogs.
Why do you need me to fill in a consultation form?
We work in a holistic way the answers to the questions will give us a clear picture of your dogs lifestyle.
What happens after a CBT session?
We will provide you with an aftercare sheet. You can then play your part in helping your dog after the session so that the Canine Bowen Technique can be as effective as possible.
Where do the sessions happen?
After we have the vet confirmation form signed and stamped I will send you a consultation form. We will then arrange a time for me to come to your home.
What happens if my dog is not interested?
Each dog is different some dogs may take longer than others. Time is taken to build trust. No dog is ever forced.
